Zurich Center for Linguistics

What we do

The Zurich Center for Linguistics (LiZZ) is a group of institutes and individuals who are involved in linguistic research in Zurich and who share common interests and resources.

Our mission

The LiZZ supports the development of the linguistically oriented institutes and initiatives of the University of Zurich (UZH). Our central goal is to strengthen linguistics in Zurich and to generally foster the public perception of the impact and value of language science.

To achieve this goal LiZZ members

  • promote scientific exchange and joint research projects;
  • pool knowledge and technical resources;

  • strive to build common training programs;

  • and they inform the general public about linguistics.

Structure of LiZZ

On the top level LiZZ is constituted by several institutes. Below that three groups of persons are relevant:

  • The members form the base of LiZZ. They assemble one to two times a year to discuss central issues in a plenary. Regular members must be employed by UZH. Other linguists affiliated with UZH can become associate members. They have the same rights as regular members but cannot be elected into the executive board.
  • The executive board discusses decisions that are to be made by the plenary assembly and prepares the annual budget and other reports. Its members are free to make minor decisions by themselves.
  • The employees are committed to the projects affiliated to LiZZ.
  • The coordination office is responsible for LiZZ's daily routine. It assists the members and particularly the executive board in all organisational tasks and in managing finances and human resources, and communication.

Join us

If you would like to participate actively in the development of linguistics within LiZZ, we would be happy to count you in as a LiZZ member. More details on the registration for the LiZZ membership can be found here. We are especially interested in a lively exchange with PhD students and welcome all initiatives and participations from early career researchers who work in the field of linguistics and language science.

Funding

The Faculty of Arts supports LiZZ with an annual sum, which is mainly used for covering running expenses (coordination units). In addition, LiZZ is financed through overhead contributions from third-party funds as well as through the income from outreach activities such as the further education programs "Zur Sprache" and "Sprachliche Inklusion".

  • The LiZZ is an independent profit center with its own accounting.
  • It is accountable to the UZH and the PhF.
