Leonard Bloomfield's book Language (1933) is more than just an introduction to linguistics, it is a classic and "by far the most widely used and the most widely quoted linguistic textbook that has ever appeared" (McCawley). The book is a must, an obligatory reference even almost a century after its first publication. Of course, several of its aspects are outdated, but it still remains a work every linguist should have read at least once in the lifetime.

We propose a one-semester lecture course, with seven units and discussion of selected chapters every two weeks. The course will begin in the first week of the fall semester. Participants should read the introduction by C.F. Hockett and the first chapter before the first meeting.

Reference: Bloomfield, Leonard (1933) Language, new edition with a foreword by Charles F. Hockett, Chicago: The University of Chicago Press 1984.

Details: Depending on the participants, the course will be held in English or German. Contact us if you have any further questions.

ECTS: UZH PhD students may pbtain ECTS points, however the reading group is open and explicitely invites everybody with a keen interest in linguistics to participate.
